SHEIN Assurance
Every product sold on SHEIN is required to meet our stringent quality standards, as well as the legal requirements of the market where it is sold.
SHEIN Assurance is part of SHEIN's product assurance programme where we use product labels to explain how we have “Managed” or “Tested” certain products before they reach you. The meaning of each label is explained below and we also keep and review records that support each label.
Just to be clear, these labels do not mean that a product with a label has any particular special features nor do they guarantee that the product is without defect. Instead, the labels are design to provide extra information on two things:
• The first label is SHEIN Assurance: Managed. This label appears on SHEIN's own-brand clothing listings where that clothing meets the criteria described on this page.
• The second label is SHEIN Assurance: Tested. This label signifies that an independent laboratory has tested a sample of the product.
A product can only have one SHEIN Assurance label. We also review labelled products on an ongoing basis, and we may remove a label if a product no longer meets the criteria set out below.
SHEIN Assurance: Managed
What The Label Means
Where the SHEIN Assurance: Managed label appears on SHEIN's own-brand clothing, it means that the item with the label meets the criteria described on this page. These products are made for SHEIN by manufacturers working within our own-brand supply chain.
These suppliers must follow our quality management framework. Through this framework, we set out requirements for the materials that can be used and for the construction of the garments. We also require that manufacturers must purchase certain fabrics only from our pre-approved fabric database. This is particularly important because some fabrics need extra testing and sourcing checks before we allow them to be used. These include PU-coated, flocked and foil-printed fabrics. We call these fabrics designated materials.
SHEIN also requires testing to be conducted on samples of both materials and finished garments. Products are selected for testing based on their level of priority. SHEIN checks own-brand products against our quality management framework.
The product must pass each step described below to receive the label and a product will only receive the SHEIN Assurance: Managed label when it meets all of our criteria. This label describes the overall quality management system used to make the product. It does not mean that every individual item was tested. It is also not a certificate.
SHEIN Assurance: Managed Standards
The requirements for the SHEIN Assurance: Managed label are set out in our supply chain standards. These standards are based on the laws of each market where we sell our products and they include a Restricted Substances List for chemicals, a safety standard for children's clothing and a textile testing standard.
These standards also include a series of development guidelines for each product category. These guidelines cover design, manufacturing and quality control. The guidelines are aligned with the product safety requirements that apply in the markets where we sell products. For example, for categories such as children's sleepwear, the guidelines include specific flammability requirements and set out which materials and product features may be used. We update these standards and/or the guidelines when any relevant laws change to ensure that they remain relevant.
How The SHEIN Quality Management Framework Works
Materials
We group fabrics and other materials according to the amount and level of testing they need. Before a supplier of “designated materials” is approved, our quality and fabric teams attend the supplier’s factory to conduct an audit. As part of this audit, we check that the supplier makes the fabric itself and we check how the supplier controls the production process.
The supplier of a designated material must also provide a chemical test report from an independent laboratory. This report is required for each new fabric that the supplier wants to introduce. The report must show that the fabric is compliant with SHEIN's Restricted Substances List. SHEIN records approved suppliers and fabrics on our fabric database.
Fabrics that are not "designated materials" are considered by us to be lower risk. These fabrics do not need an independent chemical test before they enter our supply chain. However, we still require chemical testing of these fabrics when our purchase of a particular fabric reaches a certain amount. The testing also covers sampled finished garments made with that fabric. After this initial fabric testing, SHEIN conducts further sampling of finished garments, as explained in the "In stock and on sale" section.
Design
Each product category has its own development guidelines. We require our suppliers to ensure that products meet the guidelines for that product category. For example, drawstrings on children's clothing must comply with our guidelines about length and position. Some products must also meet special rules on flammability. For these products manufacturers may only use fabric from a batch that has passed the required tests. Before production starts, our sample reviewers check a pre-production sample against the approved design.
Production
For products that are made with “designated materials”, manufacturers must order the fabric through our system and from our fabric database. If a production order does not match a fabric order in SHEIN’s system, the manufacturer cannot ship it to SHEIN. Manufacturers must also follow SHEIN's work instructions. When garments arrive at a SHEIN warehouse, SHEIN or its inspection partners check samples of the goods. They check the quality of the workmanship, sharp points and edges, and whether the goods match the approved sample. The goods are only released for sale after these checks are passed.
In Stock and On Sale
Our system selects garments from warehouse stock for laboratory testing. The system uses several factors when selecting products for testing. These factors seek to ensure that we focus our testing on the products that present a potentially higher risk. The factors include sales volume, material type, past test results for the supplier and the fabric, and product features that require higher standards.
We send selected garments to independent laboratories. The laboratories test the garments against our textile testing standard. The testing includes checks against our Restricted Substances List. It also includes flammability testing when this is relevant. The tests are based on the legal and compliance requirements of the markets where we sell products.
What Happens When A Test Fails?
If a sample fails a test, we will stop the product from being listed and withdraw the item from sale. The manufacturer or fabric supplier may receive a penalty under our quality incident rules. We trace the failure back to the material or process that caused the issue and take steps to prevent the same issue in future orders. Suppliers with repeated or serious failures may lose the right for products they manufacturer to receive the SHEIN Assurance: Managed label. They may also be removed from our supply chain entirely.
SHEIN Assurance: Tested
What The Label Means
The SHEIN Assurance: Tested label means that we sent a sample of the labelled product to an independent laboratory. The laboratory then tested the sample and found that it met the safety standards required under the relevant laws. The label also means that we hold a copy of the laboratory’s test report. The label refers to the sample that was tested and does not mean that we tested every individual item. The label does not guarantee that every item is free from every possible defect.
What Was Tested?
SHEIN identifies the tests applicable to each product category based on the legal requirements relevant to the markets where the product is sold. An independent laboratory then carries out the required tests and reports the results to SHEIN. For clothing, the tests may include tests for restricted chemicals, physical and mechanical safety, small parts and drawstrings and flammability.
For example, small parts and drawstrings may be checked in children’s clothing. Flammability may be checked for products covered by specific rules. The tests depend on the product category and the requirements that apply to it.
The SHEIN Assurance: Tested label means that an independent laboratory has tested a sample of the specific product. It also means that the sample was tested against the requirements that apply to it. SHEIN holds the resulting test reports.
The SHEIN Assurance: Tested label does not provide information about the product's durability. It also does not describe its quality, beyond the tests performed.
Important Information About The Labels
SHEIN makes reasonable efforts to keep the information supporting each label accurate and up to date. However, no system works perfectly every time. Errors may sometimes occur, particularly when independent third parties are involved. The SHEIN Assurance: Managed and SHEIN Assurance: Tested labels are not a guarantee that a product is perfect. They are not a guarantee that a product meets every possible legal requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are products without a SHEIN Assurance label unsafe?
No. Every product sold on the SHEIN Marketplace is required to meet the safety and legal requirements that apply to it. This applies whether or not the product has a label. The labels provide extra information about how SHEIN managed or tested a particular product. An unlabelled product is not automatically unsafe.
Does a SHEIN Assurance label guarantee that a product is safe?
No label can provide that guarantee. Every product is required to meet the legal safety requirements that apply to it. The labels explain the management or testing that SHEIN applied to the product and what records SHEIN holds. If you are concerned about any product, whether or not it has a label, please contact SHEIN's customer service.
Is a SHEIN Assurance: Managed label better than a SHEIN Assurance: Tested label?
No. They describe different things.
The SHEIN Assurance: Managed label appears on SHEIN's own-brand clothing. that meet the criteria described on this page. SHEIN Assurance: Tested means that SHEIN sent a sample of that product to an independent laboratory for testing. A product can only have one label: A SHEIN Assurance: Managed product will not also have the SHEIN Assurance: Tested label, even if SHEIN holds a test report for that product.
Do labels expire or get removed?
Yes. SHEIN reviews labelled products on an ongoing basis. SHEIN may remove a label if a product no longer meets the required standards.
Do SHEIN Assurance labels affect how products are ranked or recommended?
No. The labels are intended to give additional information about how SHEIN managed or tested a particular product.
