Review: Britain was already inhabited six thousand years ago, and people burnt and cut down forests to grow cereals like wheat, barley, and oats, and to breed cattle, pigs, and sheep. Around 3000 BC, they began building RITUAL SITES large, enclosed spaces for ceremonies and defense. The most famous of these is Stonehenge, a big stone structure on Salisbury Plain. Its purpose is still unknown; it could have been for healing, a religious site, or a cemetery. Nearby in Salisbury is a cathedral that holds one of the four original copies of the Magna Carta.
